The final concert, which traditionally concludes the Festival, this year brings two great stars of the international opera scene on stage in Piazza Duomo: the soprano June Anderson and the baritone Paulo Szot, conducted by Wayne Marshall and accompanied by the RAI National Symphony Orchestra for an evening dedicated to the most famous musicals of Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein, Frederick Loewe and Alan Jay Lerner, with excerpts from
Oklahoma, South Pacific, The King and I, The Sound of Music, My Fair Lady, Camelot. A show of outstanding artistic quality that will carry away the audience towards the glitter of Broadway on the last night of the Festival.
JUNE ANDERSON - Soprano
A native of Boston, soprano June Anderson ranks among the most renowned singers on the international opera and concert stage.
She is an artist with distinguished vocal qualities; tones of a strong texture in the top notes, a vocal range that is rich and makes the singing of high and agile musical movements appear effortless, a tone that is constantly clear, and the involvement and understanding of the character she represents.
June Anderson began taking singing lessons at the age of 11. When she was 17 years old, she became the youngest finalist in the Metropolitan Opera National Auditions.
She then attended Yale University as a French major, graduating cum laude.
It was after Yale that she really began to think consider becoming a singer: "I decided to go to New York and thought that if in two years’ time I was not famous I would go to Law School. Well, at the end of about nine months I was not famous, I’d run out of all my money and it was at that point that I decided I would be a singer if it killed me. I suppose it must have been the challenge because nothing was easy any more. As a youngster and teenager, studying privately, everything had been easy and I was always being told I was wonderful. All of a sudden, nobody thought I was wonderful any more. So I thought, ’Damn it, I’ll show them; I’ll prove to them that I am!’"
She studied singing with Robert Leonard.
She made her professional debut with the New York City Opera in 1978 as the Queen of the Night in Mozart’s Magic Flute.
In 1982, she was invited to sing Semiramide at the Rome Opera. Since then, June Anderson’s career has taken her to virtually every major opera house in Europe and in the United States.
She has performed with the opera companies of Vienna, Paris, Hambourg, Madrid, Florence, Geneva, La Scala, Covent Garden, Venice, Rome, Bologna, Metropolitan Opera, Chicago, San Francisco, Philadelphia. She has collaborated with such leading conductors as Leonard Bernstein, James Conlon, Charles Dutoit, Daniele Gatti, James Levine, Zubin Mehta, Riccardo Muti, Seiji Ozawa, Michel Plasson, Georges Prêtre, Wolfgang Sawallisch, Giuseppe Sinopoli, Michael Tilson Thomas.
She was the first non-Italian ever to win the prestigious Bellini d’Oro prize.
It is June Anderson who sings the aria of the Queen of the Night in the film Amadeus by Milos Forman.
She often sings at the Metropolitan Opera of New York, the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, the Festival of Pesaro and at the Aix en Provence Festival.
This artist has the vocal abilities to sing a repertoire that ranges from Giulietta (I Capuleti e i Montecchi), Norma, Violetta (La Traviata), to Tatiana (Eugene Onéguine).
In 2012, she performed Pat Nixon (Nixon In China) at the Théâtre du Chatelet, where she is scheduled to sing a recital in April 2014. This summer she will also be singing at the Spoleto Festival dei due Mondi.
PAULO SZOT
In his return to Spoleto, after his debut as Donato in Maria Golovin, Paulo Szot recently starred in the broadway revival of South Pacific at Lincoln Center Theater and received several broadway awards in 2008: TONY Awards, Drama Desk, Outer Critics Circle and Theater World Award as best actor in a musical for his portrayal of Emile de Becque. The Brazilian baritone made his acclaimed Metropolitan Opera debut as "Kovalyov" in a new production of Shostakovich’s The Nose in 2010. Career highlights include the role of Don Giovanni with Opéra de Bordeaux, Michigan Opera, and the Dallas Opera; the title role of Eugene Onegin, Guglielmo (Così fan tutte), Aeneas (Dido and Aeneas) in Marseille; Count Almaviva (Le Nozze di Figaro) at New York City Opera, Boston Lyric Opera, De Vlaamse Opera and Aix-En-Provence; Escamillo with the Metropolitan Opera, Canadian Opera Company, Teatro Municipal de Santiago, Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro; Manon at the Metropolitan Opera.
Most recently made his debut at Opera de Paris/Palais Garnier in Cosi fan Tutte, Opera di Roma in The Nose and Alla Scala di Milano in A Dog’s Heart.
He also performed at Carnegie Hall with the New York Pops, Avery Fischer Hall with the New York Philharmonic where he presented his acclaimed by critics and audience show An Evening with Paulo Szot, also presented as part of the American Songbook Series at Jazz at Lincoln Center and at the traditional Cafe Carlyle in New York.
His upcoming engagements includes: The Nose at The Metropolitan Opera, Die Fledermaus at the Metropolitan Opera, Le Nozze di Figaro in Bahrein among others.
In 2013/2014 he appears with the Australian Opera Company in the title role of Eugene Onegin and he will return to the Metropolitan Opera in 2014-2015 for "THe Death of Klinghoffer’.
WAYNE MARSHALL
Conductor, pianist and organist, Wayne Marshall is one of the most versatile and whimsical musicians today.
He has just been appointed Principal Conductor of the WDR Rundfunkorchestre in Cologne and continues to be the principal guest conductor of the Orchestra Sinfonica Giuseppe Verdi of Milan.
Born near Manchester, where he started his studies to then continue in London and Vienna, he was appreciated early in his career especially as an organist, and began his career as a conductor after having worked at a famous staging of Porgy and Bess in Glyndebourne with Simon Rattle. In 2004 he received an honorary degree from the University of Bournemouth and has recently been appointed as an Honorary Member of the Royal College of Music in London .
In 1998 he made his debut as a conductor in Italy at the Teatro La Fenice in Venice and in recent years his presence in Italy has been considerably intensified, bringing him to be a regular guest of our major orchestras: the RAI in Turin, at the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, Teatro San Carlo in Naples, Teatro Massimo of Palermo, the Cherubini Orchestra, the Academy of Santa Cecilia in Rome and the post as guest conductor for the Orchestra Giuseppe Verdi of Milan.
In 2001 he made his debut at the Teatro alla Scala in Milan.
In recent seasons he has participated in new opera stagings of Porgy and Bess, Candide and Dear Man Walking while in 2014 he will direct a new production of The Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny at the Deutsche Staatsoper of Berlin.
Recently, and in the near future, he will direct world-famous orchestras in Brussels, London, Strasbourg, Dresden, Leipzig, Stockholm, Monte Carlo, Dallas, Toulouse, Moscow.
Since 1996, Marshall has had the Marcussen organ of the Bridgewater Hall in Manchester, and he continues to perform as an organist. In 2004 he inaugurated the instrument of the new Disney Hall in Los Angeles with a new composition by James MacMillan for organ and orchestra, A Scotch Bestiary, piece which he also played at the BBC Promenade Concerts in 2005.
He has recorded for Virgin/EMI, winning major European awards. Wayne Marshall lives in Malta with his wife, pianist Jennifer Micallef, and their two sons.
RAI NATIONAL SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA
The Rai National Symphony Orchestra was founded in 1994 with the unification of the public radio corporation orchestras of Turin, Rome, Milan and Naples, becoming one of the most prestigious groups in Italy. The first concerts were directed by Georges Prêtre and Giuseppe Sinopoli, followed by Jeffrey Tate, Rafael Frühbeck de Burgos, Eliahu Inbal and Gianandrea Noseda.
Juraj Valčuha has been the principal Conductor since November 2009.
Among other significant presences on the podium: Carlo Maria Giulini, Wolfgang Sawallisch, Mstislav Rostropovič, Myung-Whun Chung, Riccardo Chailly, Lorin Maazel, Zubin Mehta, Yuri Ahronovitch, Marek Janowski, Semyon Bychkov, Dmitrij Kitaenko, Aleksandr Lazarev, Valery Gergiev, Gerd Albrecht, Yutaka Sado, Mikko Franck, James Conlon, Roberto Abbado and Kirill Petrenko.
Thanks to the presence of its concerts on radio (Radio3) and television show schedules (Rai1, Rai3 and Rai5), the Rai OSN has contributed to the diffusion of great symphonic repertoires and pages of historical and contemporary avant-garde, thanks to commissions and first performances which have obtained artistic, publishing and recording recognition, as the contemporary music festival Rai NuovaMusica which started in 2004.
The Orchestra holds regular concert seasons and special cycles in Turin, and is a frequent guest of major festivals such as MITO SettembreMusica, Biennale of Venice, Ravenna Festival and Sagra Maletestiana of Rimini. Among the institutional commitments there are Christmas concerts in Assisi, broadcast worldwide, and celebrations for Republic Day.
In 2006 it was invited to the Salzburg Festival and the Philharmonie in Berlin to celebrate the eightieth birthday of Hans Werner Henze.
Among its recent commitments: Abu Dhabi Classics, a concert tour in Germany, Austria and Slovakia, concerts at the Festival RadiRO and the Enescu Festival in Bucharest.
There was an important debut at the Musikverein in Vienna and the return to the Philharmonie in Berlin. It participated in the film-opera Rigoletto in Mantua, conducted by Mehta and directed by Bellocchio, and Cinderella, a fairy tale for a worldwide direct broadcast on Rai 1. The orchestra is also engaged in the recordings of jingles and soundtracks for Rai television programs. Its live concerts are often made into CDs and DVDs.
