CANNIBARDO E LA SICILIA - CANNIBARDO AND SICILY

Cannibardo and Sicily
by Andrea Camilleri

director Giuseppe Dipasquale
original music by Mario Incudine
performed by Mario Incudine, Antonio Vasta
with Massimo Ghini, Mimmo Mignemi
Vincenzo Crivello
Coproduction Teatro Stabile di Catania - Tunart

"When ours did not arrive, Cannibardo took Sicily. When Cannibardo arrived the Savoys took Sicily.Nothing changed since the Arabs had taken Sicily. Now that it is taken, Sicily is free because free is the spirit of the Sicilians."

The show tells the story about Garibaldi and post-unified Sicily through some excerpts taken from five of his historical novels ("La bolla di componenda" - The note of agreement, "Il filo di fumo" - A thread of smoke, "Il Birraio di Preston" - The Brewer from Preston, "La concessione del telefono" - The granting of the telephone, "Il Re di Girgenti" - The King of Girgenti). The Sicilian author traces the brief parable of a dream, narrating the hopes stirred up by Garibaldi′s landing in Sicily, and the disillusion that was instead provoked by the post-unity policies.
Camilleri, a tireless researcher of old documents, has always shown great interest in the implications and the psychological motivations behind the choices of his characters.

«Garibaldi is charismatic, charming, cunning, has a sensational sense of communication and propaganda, without the use of television: even today he would be the most brilliant. He arrives with a thousand men and beats an army of 100,000 men with 130 ships, fighting only one real battle, in Calatafimi. This gives rise to his reputation as the invincible hero and the common people will no longer call him "Canebardo" ».
